Preparation of Camera-Ready Illustrations
Introduction
These guidelines are intended to assist you with preparation
of your camera-ready proceedings manuscript. A Postscript
file of a sample manuscript is available for downloading
and printing.
Manuscript Paper
Due to changes in printing technology, SPIE no longer
uses preprinted mats. Please submit your manuscript on good-quality
white paper. If possible, use US standard 8.5 x 11 in. paper.
If you use A4 paper, be sure to adjust the margins to adhere
to SPIE specifications. Write the author's last name and
manuscript code number on the center of the back of each
page, as well as the page number.
Manuscript length and submission
procedures
The recommended length for proceedings manuscripts is 8-12
pages. Short summaries, abstracts, or viewgraphs are not
acceptable. There is a service charge of $30 for each additional
manuscript page over 12. If your manuscript is over 12 pages,
please complete the Service Charge Invoice form and return
it to SPIE. Please send your original manuscript flat and
protected against damage to:
SPIE/Ukrainian Chapter of SPIE
45 prospekt Nauki, 03028 Kiev, Ukraine (for Postal mail)
journal@spie.org.ua
(for E-mail)
A copy of your manuscript should be sent to the Conference
Chair(s). Upon receipt, manuscripts and illustrations become
the property of SPIE and will not be returned to the author.
Type Specifications
Laser printers and other high-resolution printers
Use a laser printer with resolution of at least 300 dots
per inch or a letter-quality printer. All text and illustrations
must appear within a 7 x 9 inch (178 x 229 mm) area. For
U.S. standard size paper (8.5 x 11 inches), set margins
to .75 in. (18 mm) left and right, and 1 in. (24 mm) top
and bottom. For A4 paper, set margins to 17 mm left and
right, 25 mm top and 45 mm bottom. We recommend 10-point
Times Roman or equivalent typeface for the main text. Use
boldface or italic for emphasis only. Single-space all text,
allowing extra space between paragraphs. The proper font
sizes to be used in various situations are as follows:
Article title:................................
16 pt, bold
Author names, affiliations.........
.12 pt
Section heading.........................
.11 pt, bold
Subsection heading.....................
10 pt, bold
Normal text.................................
10 pt
Footnote text................................
9 pt
Keyword List
SPIE is in the process of converting our publications database
into a searchable electronic format. To this end, we ask
that you insert a list of up to 10 keywords of your choice
between the abstract and the text proper. Your compliance
with this request is greatly appreciated and will ensure
that your paper is indexed appropriately.
Manuscript Corrections
If you must make a correction(s) to your manuscript after
sending it to SPIE, send a camera-ready replacement page(s)
to SPIE. Include your code number, a letter with explicit
directions, and a marked photocopy of the original page
showing the exact location of the correction. We will substitute
your replacement page. Please do not call with corrections;
you must provide camera-ready corrections to your manuscript.
SPIE will make every effort to accommodate your corrections
up to the time the book goes to press.
Preparations of Camera-Ready
Illustrations
Proper figure preparation is essential for optimum reproduction
of line drawings and photographs. Figures positioned on
the manuscript page will be reproduced full size. Figures
should be clear and legible but sized to make economical
use of space. Similar or related figures should be of uniform
size with uniform lettering. All figures should be called
out in the text as well as properly labeled and captioned.
Black-and-white illustrations
(line art)
These should be original artwork (pen-and-ink or computer
generated) and sized to scale. High-quality photocopies
may be used. Paste line drawings in position on the manuscript
and make all lettering, symbols, lines, etc., in black ink.
Continuous-tone photographs
and illustrations
For best reproduction of photographs, SPIE suggests that
authors submit continuous-tone photographs, sized and pasted
into place in the manuscript. If you are unable to provide
an appropriately sized image, submit your original photographs
with your manuscript and SPIE will handle sizing and reproduction.
Digital halftones produced on a laser printer are also acceptable.
Original photos will not be returned.
Pasting up figures
If photographic images or other illustrations are submitted
separately, be sure to leave sufficient space for the photograph
or line drawing in your manuscript and type the figure caption
in position on the manuscript. Enclose original photographs
or drawings, clearly labeling each one on the back with
your code number, figure number, manuscript page number,
and correct orientation of the figure. To attach figures
to your manuscript paper, use rubber cement, pressure-sensitive
wax, or white graphics tape. Do not use clear tape over
the image area. Figures may be pasted within the text or
at the end of the manuscript.
Color illustrations
Authors must pay the costs necessary to produce color separations
and print color figures in the proceedings. If color reproduction
is essential to your paper, please return a completed Color
Figures Form with your manuscript.
